  1. HI Dr Sher, if DNA within the egg is inactive until it is ovulated, why is maternal age such a big factor? If the DNA is inactive within the egg, then why is the rate of aneuploidy so high? I don’t get it!

    • The DNA not inactive. It is subject to both intrinsic and extrinsic influences throughout!

  2. Hi Dr Sher, our RE always uses IVF to fertilise my eggs. We usually get between 75-85% fertilisation. Should we insist on ICSI or is it best to stick to ivf? No mfi, just age. I’m 40 and hubby is 43.

  3. Hi Dr Sher, is it ok to take ganirelix at the same time as Gonal-F and luveris or should there be a gap between them? Should ganirelix be taken in the morning and stims at night?

    • In my opinion it really does not matter, one way or the other.

  4. Dr. Sher,

Thank you so much for reviewing questions!

I had FET on 12/11. On 12/23 my beta was 151. On 12/27 my beta was 950. 12/29, I had a transvaginal ultrasound and saw the little gestational sac and yolk sac. I’m scheduled to go back in a week. The doctor said everything looked perfect, so I know it’s not ectopic. I’m 39 and this is my first pregnancy.

12/30, while driving, I felt a gush of blood. When I checked, if was bright, bright red and watery. It seemed like a lot, but it hadn’t gone through to my pants. It was maybe almost as much as a panty liner, and quite fast. However, then the bleeding just stopped. There is maybe a tiny bit of spotting now– brown and seemingly the remnants from two days ago. No clots, just bright blood, and quite a bit all of the sudden. I have not spotted at all before this large bleed.

My clinic isn’t open until tomorrow. I know this could possibly be a miscarriage. Are there any other possibilities? I’m obsessing over this and really stressing out.

Thank you and happy New Year!

    • Yes it could be a miscarriage…..but it could also be innocuous. Unfortunately only time will tell. You need a repeat ultrasound a few days after the bleeding stops.

      Good luck!

  5. Hi Dr. Sher

I would like to have a medical advise from you. I am 38 years old. Some years ago I took general and intensive medical check up and I found out that I have CMV (IgG+ and IgM+), HSV 1 (IgG+ and IgM+) and HSV2 (IgG+ and IgM+). Last week I did the test again and the result still + for all viruses, both IgG and IgM. Now that I am in two weeks waiting after an embryo transfer (first cycle IVF). But still I am worried, whether it will be safe for my pregnancy while I have all these viruses living in my body. Will I have a healthy and normal baby?
I experience frequent outbreak, especially during menstruation and under stress condition. I took Acyclovir 400mg (2 x daily) for suppressive treatment, because I had outbreak during first week of gonal stimulation, and right after ET I stopped taking the pills. Is this the correct way to handle the situation? Is there a better way to ensure that the eggs and embryo will not get infected with those viruses?
The IVF clinic retrieved 6 follicles (6 eggs): 2 were considered abnormal, later after fertilization 3 embryos were eliminated, only 1 embryo was considered developed rather in good grade (day 3 with 13 cell and 10% fragmentation). Can the viruses play role in bringing down the quality of eggs and embryos?
Thank you Dr for dedicating your time and energy to answer questions.

    • The risk associated with such viral infetcions is very small! I would not worry unduly! The IgG refers to previous infection . The IgA level needs to come down and it will almost certainly do so over time.
